Doctors, nurses refused vaccination duty
On Tuesday 26 May 2009, The Dutch News.nl reported something remarkable had happened. Doctors and Nurses in Holland stood up to governmental pressure and refused to inject young women with the HPV-vaccine.
An unknown number of doctors and nurses in Brabant and Zeeland provinces face possible sanctions for refusing to take part in the nationwide campaign to vaccinate girls against cervical cancer, the AD reports on Tuesday.
The medical staff refused to take part because they did not have enough experience with the vaccine and were concerned about possible side effects, a spokesman for youth health services in Brabant told the paper.
Doctors’ organisation LAD refused to say how many were involved. But a spokesman said it is the first time doctors have registered a formal refusal to vaccinate.
The cervical cancer campaign has been judged to be a failure because less than 50% of girls aged 13 to 17 turned up for the vaccination.
