A Recent CNN Article lead with this headline…

Gardasil® Deaths, Gardasil® Side Effects, Gardasil® Paralysis -

Is the HPV Vaccine Given to Prevent Cervical Cancer Causing More Medical Problems?

A vaccine designed to prevent cervical cancer is coming under fresh scrutiny amid thousands of complaints linking it to a range of health problems.

Gardasil® has been the subject of 7,802 “adverse event” reports from the time the Food and Drug Administration approved its use two years ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Girls and women have blamed the vaccine for causing ailments from nausea to paralysis — even death. Fifteen deaths were reported to the FDA, and 10 were confirmed, but the CDC says none of the 10 were linked to the vaccine. The CDC says it continues to study the reports of illness.

Gardasil prevents the spread of human papillomavirus, known as HPV — a sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer in a relatively small number of girls and women.

The vaccine’s manufacturer, Merck & Co. Inc., says it has distributed more than 26 million Gardasil® vaccines worldwide, including nearly 16 million in the United States. It estimates that 8 million girls and women have received the vaccine in the United States since June 2006. V

Two girls allege in court that the vaccine made them sick.

One — Jesalee Parsons of Broken Bow, Oklahoma — got the shot at age 13.

Jesalee’s lawyer, Michael McLaren, said she got the shot on February 27, 2007 and soon developed a fever and felt pain. The next day, he said, Jesalee felt pain in her chest and abdomen.

Her mother, Laura Parsons, said Jesalee spent weeks in the hospital and underwent two surgeries after developing pancreatitis. She says the federal government should have studied the drug more before approving its use.

“I just feel let down by the government,” Parsons said.

Merck says it could be a coincidence that the girls got sick after receiving the vaccine.

The company said in a statement that an adverse event report “does not mean that a causal relationship between an event and vaccination has been established — just that the event occurred after vaccination.”

Merck said it would continue to evaluate reports of adverse reactions. It said it “updates product labels with new safety information as appropriate.”

Vaginal and Vulvar Cancers

Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control. Cancer is always named for the part of the body where it starts, even if it spreads to other body parts later. When cancer starts in the vagina, it is called vaginal cancer. The vagina, also called the birth canal, is the hollow, tube-like channel between the bottom of the uterus and the outside of the body.

When cancer starts in the vulva, it is called vulvar cancer. The vulva is the outer part of the female genital organs. It has two folds of skin, called the labia. Vulvar cancer most often occurs on the inner edges of the labia.

When vaginal and vulvar cancers are found early, treatment is most effective. Treatment of vulvar cancer, in particular, often leads to a cure.

Signs and Symptoms

Early on, most vaginal cancers do not cause signs and symptoms. But if there are symptoms, they may include:

Bleeding that is unusual for you because of when it happens or how heavy it is.

Pain in your pelvis, the area below your stomach and in between your hip bones, especially when you pass urine or have sex.

Many women who have vulvar cancer have signs and symptoms. They may include:

Itching of the vulva (mostly on the labia) that does not go away.

Changes in the color of the skin of the vulva, so that it looks redder or whiter than is normal for you.

Skin changes in the vulva, including what looks like a rash or warts.

A sore on the vulva that does not go away.

It is important for you to pay attention to your body and know what is normal for you. If you have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, talk to your doctor, nurse, or other health care professional right away. Symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer, but the only way to know is to see your health care professional.

Who Gets Vaginal and Vulvar Cancers?

Vaginal and vulvar cancers are very rare. While all women are at risk for these cancers, very few will get them. In 2004,* vaginal cancer accounted for only 1 to 2 percent of all gynecologic cancers. Vulvar cancer accounted for approximately 5 percent of all gynecologic cancers. In 2004, 1,130 women in the United States were told that they had vaginal cancer and 3,631 women learned they had vulvar cancer.†

In a previous Inconvenient Woman Blog entry we noted the death of 17 year old Jessica Ericzon, “an all-American teenager,” whose tragic death has been tied to the Merck vaccine Gardasil®. Jefferson County Medical Examiner Samuel Livingstone, reported Jessie’s death to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System. Her family started the Jessica Ericzon Memorial Fund to award scholarships to her classmates.

In the July 20, 2008 edition of the, New York Post, SUSAN EDELMAN told Jessica Ericzon’s story. It serves as a cautionary tale for girls, their mothers and guardians. In my opinion it should be required reading for every state official who controls public health policy, every school nurse and every pediatrician, gynecologist and family practice physician. Email it to your local, state and congressional representatives. Bring it to PTA meetings. Send it to anyone who loves his or her daughters, sister, mother, and wife. Jessica’s chance to be a wife, a mom, and a grandmother has been taken from her by a system more focused on profi,t than patient safety. It is past time we stand up to the lobbyist that grease the wheels of government with cash and favors and the representatives more concerned with the next campaign donation than the health and welfare of their most vulnerable constituents.

TRAGIC: Jessica Ericzon collapsed dead days after receiving a shot of the cervical-cancer vaccine Gardasil.

She loved SpaghettiO’s, pepperoni, lilies, listening to her iPod and making her pals laugh.

In her senior yearbook, she wrote, “The best things in life aren’t things, they’re friends.”

Now that’s the quote chiseled into her gravestone.

Jessica Ericzon, 17, was “an all-American teenager,” as described by one of her upstate LaFargeville teachers.

Last February, she was working on her softball pitches, getting ready for a class trip to Universal Studios in Florida and hitting the slopes to snowboard with her older brother.

Then one day, the blond, blue-eyed honors student collapsed dead in her bathroom.

It started with a pain in the back of her head. On the advice of her family doctor, Jessie had taken a series of three Gardasil shots. The vaccine, marketed for females ages 9 to 26, is the first found to ward off strains of the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer.

Jessie got the first injection in July 2007. After her second shot in September, she complained of a pain in the back of her head, fatigue and soreness in some joints, said her mom, Lisa.

On Feb. 20, while on winter break from school, she got her third and final dose of the vaccine. The next night, “she told me the spot on the back of her head was bothering her again,” her mom said. The next morning, Feb. 22, Lisa, a hospital technician, left for work just after 5 a.m., leaving Jessie asleep.

Jessie never showed up for the class she was taking at Jefferson Community College.

When her mom got home at 3:20 p.m., she found Jessie sprawled on her back on the bathroom floor, with blood spots on her head where it had hit a flowerpot.

Jefferson County Medical Examiner Samuel Livingstone is stumped. “She was essentially dead by the time she hit the floor. Whatever it was, it was instantaneous,” Livingstone said. His autopsy found no cause. He speculates she suffered a cardiac arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, extremely rare in young people.

Jessie had been on birth-control pills for a year to treat acne, records show.

Livingstone reported Jessie’s death to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System. Run by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it has collected 8,000 reports of problems after Gardasil shots, including paralysis, seizures and miscarriages.

Seventeen other deaths following the vaccine have been reported since Merck & Co. introduced it in 2006.

Officials have confirmed 11 of the reported deaths so far, said CDC spokesman Curtis Allen. They have found “no pattern or connection” to Gardasil in eight deaths and are still reviewing three, he said.

Lisa Ericzon now feels her daughter was “a guinea pig” for Gardasil, and is urging parents to research the vaccine before letting their daughters get it.

“I want other mothers to know,” said Lisa, the first parent of a girl who died after Gardasil to speak publicly.

“I don’t want them to go through what I went through.”

Jessie planned to major in psychology at SUNY Plattsburgh and pursue her greatest ambition – to become a New York state trooper. Just six days before she died, she got to ride along with a trooper canine unit. She was ecstatic.

The reports of HPV vaccine reactions, injuries and deaths continue to roll in, not only to NVIC but also to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (Search HPV4 at: http://www.medalerts.org/vaersdb/index.html) newspapers, and television stations.

And the only response that comes from officials at the CDC, FDA and drug companies when perfectly healthy teenage girls collapse into unconsciousness, suffer a massive seizure, get paralyzed or die suddenly after being injected with GARDASIL is the buracratic mantra: “It is a coincidence.”

“I just kept thinking about the good outcomes rather than what could actually happen.” What happened to Crystal Olivera was arm pain so severe that it left her unconscious immediately after a Gardasil shot, something she had never experienced with her hepatitis and meningitis vaccines. “The next thing I know I am on the floor in the fetal position.” Had she known more about Gardasil – “I wish I’d waited a little until it was out in the public more and also that they did more research about the negative side effects.” – Jamie Colby, Fox News (July 11, 2008) SEE VIDEO at http://www.foxnews.com/video2/video08.html?maven_referralObject=2233990&maven_referralPlayli

“Jessica Ericzon, 17, was “an all- American teenager,” as described by one of her upstate LaFargeville teachers. His autopsy found no cause.” – Susan Edelman, New York Post (July 20, 2008)

” Katherine Kimzey got her first injection of Gardasil along with a Hepatitis-A vaccine and a chicken pox booster. She got the second injection two months later, along with the D-TaP vaccination. Six weeks after the second injection of Gardasil, Katherine passed out. “I tried to get up and my neck was stiff, and I couldn’t move it,” the teenager explained. “I couldn’t move at all.” Katherine spent five days in the hospital.

Shannon Nelson, 18, from the Chicago area, got the Gardasil shot and two other vaccines– at the same time. Within a week the soccer star could barely move. “When I went into the hospital I couldn’t walk at all. I had to have a wheelchair. It just got worse each day,” she explained. Nelson spent 23 days in the hospital and while she’s better now the teenager believes one of the vaccines she received is responsible for her illness and her neurologist says it’s certainly possible.

Katherine Kimzey is back on the soccer field in North Texas. But she still has occasional pain and doesn’t know what the future will hold. Thinking about her past experience she says she still worries and so does her mom. Michelle Kimzey says next time; she won’t be so quick to jump on the new vaccine bandwagon. “I think the connection is huge,” she said.

In a statement to CBS 11 News, Merck — the maker of Gardasil — said it has analyzed the reports of paralysis and death, and believes: no safety issue related to the vaccine has been identified.” – Ginger Allen, CBS News 11 – Dallas (July 21, 2008) http://cbs11tv.com/health/Gardasil.cervical.cancer.2.776277.html

“Consumer concerns over safety have not been assuaged by “reassurances from the government,” said Barbara Loe Fisher, cofounder of the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC). “We have heard reassurances about safety before – for example, with the whole-cell pertussis (diphtheria- pertussis-tetanus [DPT]) vaccine in the 1980s,” she said, noting that this was subsequently withdrawn and replaced by an acellular version in the United States in the 1990s. Ms. Fisher has a son whom she believes was damaged by the DPT vaccine 28 years ago, and she has worked ever since as an activist in the vaccine safety field in various capacities, including a 4-year stint as a consumer member of the FDA Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.

In addition, the NVIC has been running its own private vaccine reaction registry for the past 26-years, and it currently has about 140 reports on Gardasil, Ms. Fisher said. “These include reports of injury and death, and we are seeing a pattern of what we have termed ‘atypical collapse,’ ” she commented. “These include cases where a girl suddenly passes into unconsciousness either immediately or within 24 hours of vaccination and then revives feeling weak and unable to speak properly or exhibiting other neurological signs. What we are concerned about is that girls are not aware of this possibility and could be crossing the road or driving a car and suddenly pass out.” Ms. Fisher also outlined concerns about how Gardasil has been studied. She pointed out that very few of the participants in the clinical trials were aged 11 to 12 years, which is the recommended target age for the vaccine. The New York Times reported in 2006 that of the 20,000 trial participants, 1200 were younger than 16 years.” – Zosia Chustecka, Medscape Medical News (August 8, 2008) http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578110

Girls and Young Women Pay the Price for

Corporate Greed and the FDA’s Failure to Protect

Reported by Barbara Loe Fisher

The vaccine reaction reports keep coming into the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) from mothers describing how they took their healthy teenage girls into a pediatrician or gynecologist’s office where they were given a GARDASIL shot and, then, nothing was ever the same again.

The reports of HPV vaccine reactions, injuries and deaths continue to roll in, not only to NVIC but also to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (Search HPV4 at: http://www.medalerts.org/vaersdb/index.html) newspapers, and television stations.

And the only response that comes from officials at the CDC, FDA and drug companies when perfectly healthy teenage girls collapse into unconsciousness, suffer a massive seizure, get paralyzed or die suddenly after being injected with GARDASIL is the zombie mantra: “It is a coincidence.”

Last week a nurse who is an administrator in the outpatient department for a group of hospitals in California called and asked if NVIC had been getting reports of unusual collapse after GARDASIL vaccination. I said, yes, we are getting those reports and she said “A lot of our patients are collapsing after the shot is given. It happens with GARDASIL more frequently than with any other vaccine we give.” That same week, NVIC received a report from the mother of a 15-year old daughter who got her first GARDASIIL shot last month. Within 10 minutes of being injected, she collapsed and had her first grand mal seizure, became incontinent, temporarily lost vision in her right eye, suffered uncontrolled vomiting and had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. Another report to NVIC that week also involved first-time seizures in a 15-year old girl after she got a GARDASIL shot.

Through June 30, 2008, there have been reports that at least 17 to 20 deaths have occurred following GARDASIL and were filed with the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS), although the FDA has yet to admit even one death is causally related to the vaccine, suggesting that the girls would have died that day even if no vaccine had been given.

Many of the teenage girls, who die suddenly after vaccination without explanation, were among the brightest and the best and in top physicial condition. This was true for 17-year old Jessica Ericzon, a New York softball player, snowboarder and honor roll student who dropped dead within 48 hours of getting a GARDASIL shot. A coroner could find no cause for her death after an autopsy.

There have been so many reports of reactions, injuries and deaths following GARDASIL vaccination (20-25 percent of all vaccine adverse event reports being filed with VAERS are for GARDASIL vaccine reactions) that the FDA and CDC issued a statement defending the vaccine’s safety on July 22, 2008.

But one of the vaccine’s developers has urged caution and offers practical advice about the need for continued use of Pap screening to prevent cervical cancer rather than relying on the vaccine to do the job. ” If you are at all concerned, then don’t have the vaccine – have regular Pap smears and you will be equally protected from cervical cancer….Pap screening is still the only proven method we have for cervical cancer prevention,” said Professor Diane Harper, Ph.D. “We don’t know how long the vaccine will protect a woman from HPV infection, and the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV infection that cause cervical cancer.”

The “coincidence” defense mounted by doctors and drug-company officials every time a vaccination is followed by injury and death is as old as it is unscientific.

It is amazing that they have been able to get away with it for so long. Babies can’t talk and babies can’t walk so who they will become is still a dream. But young girls and women have already become much of who they will be and, on the cusp of fulfilling the dream, their vaccine deaths and injuries are much more difficult to sweep under the carpet.

It is immoral for doctors in government and industry to continue to look away from the damage done when vaccines cut down the brightest and most physically fit among us. The suggestion that these healthy, high functioning girls were biologically compromised and would have died or been injured that day even if no vaccine had been given is ludicrous. If those in government responsible for protecting the public health and safety look the other way when healthy individuals die and are injured by pharmaceutical products pronounced by government as “safe” for public use, then we cannot be assured that any licensed drug or vaccine is safe.

Last year, the head of the FDA in China was executed for allowing toxic pharmaceutical products to be licensed and released for public use that ended up killing and crippling people.

Summary of “Abstinence-Only and Comprehensive Sex Education and the Initiation of Sexual Activity and Teen Pregnancy,” Kohler et al., Journal of Adolescent Health, April 2008.

Pamela Kohler and Lisa Manhart of the University of Washington’s Center for AIDS and STD and William Lafferty of UW’s Department of Health Services examined the effect of formal sex education programs on the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections by analyzing data from 1,150 teenage girls and 1,121 teenage boys ages 15 to 19 who responded to the National Survey of Family Growth’s general questionnaire and special adolescent interview. The sample was restricted to participants who were heterosexual and had never been married.

To determine what type of education the participants received, the researchers asked whether the teens ever received “any formal instruction at school, church, a community center or some other place about how to say no to sex” before age 18. A follow-up question asked about receiving instruction on birth control methods. Those who reported receiving both education about birth control and education that emphasized a “say no to sex” approach were classified as having participated in comprehensive sex education. Those who reported only receiving sex education about how to say no to sex were classified as having received abstinence-only sex education.

The researchers excluded respondents who reported exposure to sex education that taught only birth control without discussing abstinence, those who did not answer sex education questions or those who reported an age of first intercourse younger than 10. They also excluded those who reported having had sex before they received formal sex education. Characteristics associated with risky behavior among teens — including age, household income, race or ethnicity, geographical residence and “intactness” of the family unit — were assessed as potential variables.

Findings

Of the 1,719 teens included in the study, 47.4% were female respondents, and the median age was 17. In addition, 76.7% of the participants were classified as white, and 14% were classified as black. About half of household incomes reported were less than $40,000 annually, and a little more than half of the participants resided in a central city. About 41.3% of the participants reported a “nonintact” family unit. Overall, 9.4% reported not having received any formal sex education, 23.8% reported abstinence-only sex education, and 66.8% said they had received comprehensive sex education. Those who had not received formal sex education tended to be black, from rural areas and from low-income, nonintact families. Participants receiving abstinence-only education were typically younger and from low- to moderate-income, intact families. Those who reported having received comprehensive sex education were somewhat older, white and from higher-income families in more urban areas.

Almost half of the respondents reported having engaged in sex by the time of the survey. After adjusting for other predictors, the researchers found that abstinence-only sex education was not significantly associated with a teenager ever engaging in intercourse. However, comprehensive sex education was associated with slightly reduced reports of engaging in intercourse. Among all the respondents, 7.3% reported a pregnancy. After adjusting for other variables, abstinence-only sex education was not significantly associated with reported teen pregnancy, compared with those who had received no formal sex education. Teenagers who reported having had comprehensive sex education were significantly less likely to report a teen pregnancy, compared with those who had not received sex education. In addition, comprehensive sex education was associated with a 50% lower risk of teen pregnancy compared with abstinence-only education. The study also found that neither abstinence-only nor comprehensive sex education programs were significantly associated with risk of STIs, compared with no sex education.

Conclusions

The researchers noted that abstinence-only programs have no significant effect on “delaying the initiation of sexual activity or in reducing the risk for teen pregnancy” and STIs. They added that when compared with no sex education or abstinence-only education, comprehensive sex education programs were associated with a significantly reduced risk of pregnancy. Comprehensive sex education also was associated with a marginally reduced likelihood of a teen becoming sexually active, when compared with no sex education. In addition, the report showed a “strong relationship” between a family’s “intactness” and whether teens’ received sex education. Teenagers from intact families were more likely to have received formal sex education, compared with those from nonintact families.

The researchers noted that because the findings indicated a decreased likelihood of pregnancy among teens who received comprehensive sex education, adolescents who received abstinence-only education might “engage in higher-risk behaviors once they initiate sexual activity.” Although further research is needed to examine the effects of formal sex education, the study’s findings “suggest that formal comprehensive sex education programs reduce the risk for teen pregnancy without increasing the likelihood that adolescents will engage in sexual activity,” the researchers write, adding that the findings “confirm results from randomized controlled trials that abstinence-only programs have minimal effect on sexual risk behavior.”

In a recent interview on CSPAN Davis stated, “For much of its history, the cancer war has been fighting the wrong battles, with the wrong weapons, against the wrong enemies.”

The Secret History of the War on Cancer by Dr. Devra Davis shows, decade by decade, how the campaign has targeted the disease and left off the table the things that cause it—tobacco, alcohol, the workplace, and other environmental hazards. Conceived in explicitly military terms, the effort has focused on defeating an enemy by detecting, treating, and curing disease. Overlooked and suppressed was any consideration of how the world in which we live and work affects whether we get cancer. The result is appalling: over 10 million preventable cancer deaths over the past thirty years.

This has been no accident.

With each page of Davis’ carefully crafted book, readers will become more conscious of the obvious issues that have been ignored or marginalized and appalled by the attitude and actions of America’s medical profession, the American Cancer Society, the petrochemical industry and, “our” government. Many of us concerned with the health and wellness of women and girls knew something just wasn’t right; but Dr. Davis’s book moves us from inkling to awareness.

Filled with compelling personalities and never-before-revealed information. The Secret History of the War on Cancer is the gripping story of a major public health effort diverted and distorted for private gain. It carefully documents how, over time, the “WAR” on Cancer has come to be orchestrated by the leaders of those industries that made cancer-causing products, and who sometimes profited from drugs and technologies for finding and treating the disease.

Davis, driven by the conviction, writes with passion about premature deaths, and preventable illnesses resulting from exposure to industrial toxins and presents a powerful call to action. In the book she proposes a kind of truth-and-reconciliation approach to get industry and public health experts mutually involved; but notes that, based on the continued loss of life, change is simply not happening fast enough.

Among the Findings Described in The Secret History of the War on Cancer

— As early as 1936, the world’s leading cancer scientists understood that tobacco, diagnostic and solar radiation, benzene, and hormones caused cancer. The preparation and conduct of World War II with its focus on immediate survival effectively sidetracked these early findings of cancer hazards.

— Many more young people (those under 40 years of age) are getting cancer. One of the reasons may be the excessive use of x-rays in infants and children, and our failures to reduce exposures to other cancer hazards like those in urban air or agents that can leach from some plastics. Earlier this year, the American College of Radiology advised against unnecessary and excessive use of CT and other forms of diagnostic radiation in children, warning that this will further add to the growing cancer burden in young people today.

— When first reports emerged that coke oven workers had higher rates of lung cancer in the 1970s, some suggested that this was because most of them were black. Not until similar findings showed up in white Mormon workers five years later, was the link between coke oven work and lung cancer established. While one in eight Americans today is black, one in three works in a blue collar job, and one in five lives within two miles of a hazardous waste site. This increased environmental burden has never been considered when trying to understand why rates of prostate, breast, and colo-rectal cancer are so much higher in blacks than whites.

— Davis cited women chemist in Shanghai had a 14% increased incidence of breast cancer; chemists around the world also have a higher rate of cancer – due to poor protection in the laboratory.

— The life-saving test for cervix cancer, called the Pap smear, was not put into use for more than a decade after it was shown to save lives, because of fears that it would undermine the private practice of medicine. These delays led to the deaths or unnecessary surgery of millions of women, who succumbed to an illness that could have been avoided.

— Pasteur developed the germ theory of disease and was concerned about infectious disease. His dying words were; “remember the host; remember the host conditions” – in reference to milkmaids and their carrying infectious germs – without necessarily becoming ill from them.

— Old approach to curing cancer came out of WWII and the poison Gas Therapy

Leukemia – over abundance of white blood cells (weiss blut) chemotherapy was developed as a poison gas to fight the cells and was developed as secret army research.

—New paradigm of treating cancer includes boosting the immune system and the development of extracts from broccoli, chocolate and red wine to fight what many are coming to believe are cancers that are viral in nature.

Concerning Hormones and Cancer…

Davis reintroduces Barbara Seaman’s 1969 book, The Doctors’ Case Against the Pill, which was the basis for the Nelson Pill Hearings on the safety of the combined oral contraceptive pill. As a result of the hearings, a health warning was added to the pill, the first informational insert for any prescription drug. Robert Finch, Secretary of HEW, wrote Seaman “… THE DOCTORS’ CASE AGAINST THE PILL… was a major factor in our strengthening the language in the final warning published in the Federal Register to be included in each package of the Pill.” The dramatic events surrounding the hearings also brought together many soon-to-be prominent health feminists for the first time, and encouraged them to pursue further action. In 1975 Seaman co-founded the National Women’s Health Network with Alice Wolfson, Belita Cowan, Mary Howell, M.D., and Phyllis Chesler, Ph.D. According to Davis – we should have listened to Barbara’s warning thirty years ago. Dr Seaman is now celebrated in the same medical circles that blackballed her then. The government has finally confirmed that her warning about synthetic estrogen was correct.

— Davis cites studies showing HRT raises the risk of breast cancer, blood clots, heart attacks and dementia.

— About HPV …it is a factor in not just cervical cancer, but laryngeal and an anal — however the vaccine has not been fully tested as an agent against infectious disease.

—Questionable HPV Trail Methodology — Less than 20,000 girls between the ages of 15 – 25 were tested, and yet the CDC recommends the vaccine for girls as young as 11 and 12. Davis raised the question of what about the boys? And noted that two of three sexual encounters for teens less than 18 yrs old ARE NOT CONSENTUAL.

Milloy questions the ability of many parents to educate their children about STIs and why there was no “public outcry” about human papillomavirus infections until a pharmaceutical company developed a vaccine. He adds that even though boys are “rarely involved” in STI studies, they are “definitely involved in the problem.”

According to Milloy, former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders “all but predicted” the current STI epidemic among teens. Elders’ “controversial remedies” of giving condoms to students at school — as well as “making sex education fun while keeping it real” and suggesting masturbation was the “safest sex this side of abstinence” — brought “much-needed attention to an impending crisis, Milloy writes. However, the “frank talk” about sex and STI prevention that “left” the national dialogue after Elders resigned in 1994, and the “instinctual quest for sex” among today’s teens, now “carries the risk of unspeakable pain,” Milloy says (Milloy, Washington Post, 4/2).

Nationally Representative CDC Study Finds

1 in 4 Teenage Girls Has a Sexually Transmitted Disease

“3.2 Million Female Adolescents Estimated to Have at Least One of the Most Common STDs”

Chicago (March 11, 2008) – A CDC study released today estimates that one in four (26 percent) young women between the ages of 14 and 19 in the United States – or 3.2 million teenage girls – is infected with at least one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (human papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia, herpes simplex virus, and trichomoniasis). The study, presented today at the 2008 National STD Prevention Conference, is the first to examine the combined national prevalence of common STDs among adolescent women in the United States, and provides the clearest picture to date of the overall STD burden in adolescent women.

Led by CDC’s Sara Forhan, M.D., M.P.H., the study also finds that African-American teenage girls were most severely affected. Nearly half of the young African-American women (48 percent) were infected with an STD, compared to 20 percent of young white women.

The two most common STDs overall were human papillomavirus, or HPV (18 percent), and chlamydia (4 percent). Data were based on an analysis of the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

“Today’s data demonstrate the significant health risk STDs pose to millions of young women in this country every year,” said Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. “Given that the health effects of STDs for women – from infertility to cervical cancer – are particularly severe, STD screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities.”

“High STD infection rates among young women, particularly young African-American women, are clear signs that we must continue developing ways to reach those most at risk,” said John M. Douglas, Jr., M.D., director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “STD screening and early treatment can prevent some of the most devastating effects of untreated STDs.”

CDC recommends annual chlamydia screening for sexually active women under the age of 25. CDC also recommends that girls and women between the ages of 11 and 26 who have not been vaccinated or who have not completed the full series of shots be fully vaccinated against HPV.

The study of STDs among teenage girls is one of several presented today at the 2008 National STD Prevention Conference that highlights the significant burden of STDs among girls and women, and identifies creative prevention strategies for reducing the toll of STDs in the United States.

Contraceptive services represent missed opportunities for STD screening, prevention

Two other studies featured at the conference point to missed opportunities for STD testing, and underscore that it is critical for STD screening to be included in comprehensive reproductive health services for young women.

A study by CDC’s Sherry L. Farr and colleagues found that while the majority of sexually active 15- to-24 year-old young women (82 percent) receive contraceptive or STD/HIV services, few receive both (39 percent). In addition, only 38 percent of a subset of young women who reported receiving contraceptive services associated with unprotected sex (e.g., pregnancy testing) also received STD/HIV counseling, testing or treatment, which indicates that many women at high risk are not receiving necessary prevention services.

A separate study, by CDC’s Shoshanna Handel and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, examined STD screening rates among young women seeking emergency contraception, which would suggest recent unprotected sex. The study found that just 27 percent were screened for chlamydia or gonorrhea. A significant proportion of those women (12 percent) had a positive test result, highlighting the need for routine chlamydia and gonorrhea screening at emergency contraception visits.

Innovative programs provide models for effective STD prevention

Other research from the conference highlighted creative programs that are effectively screening and treating people with STDs, and identifying those most at risk.

A CDC-funded confidential chlamydia screening program in high school-based health clinics in California resulted in high rates of screening among those seeking contraceptive or STD services (range: 85-94 percent). It also revealed significantly higher infection rates among African-American women than white women (9.6 percent versus 1.7 percent).

A study by New York City health officials assessed the effectiveness of an express visit option, allowing patients at city clinics to be tested for STDs without a doctor’s exam. Comparing data before and after express visits were routinely offered, researchers found that the express visit option made it possible for an additional 4,588 tests to be performed, and increased STD diagnoses by 17 percent (2,617 versus 2,231).

DAILY WOMEN’S HEALTH POLICY REPORT PUBLIC HEALTH & EDUCATION

About 25% of U.S. girls and young women ages 14 to 19 have at least one of four common sexually transmitted infections, according to a study released Tuesday by CDC during a conference in Chicago, the New York Times reports. According to the Times, the study was the first to look at data on the four most common STIs in adolescent females, including human papillomavirus. The findings, when extrapolated to the general population, show that 3.2 million teenage girls have at least one of four STIs — chlamydia, herpes simplex virus 2, HPV or the common parasite trichomoniasis, according to Sara Forhan, a CDC researcher who led the study. Officials at CDC said the findings underscore the need to strengthen screening, vaccination and other prevention measures for the diseases.

The 838 participants were chosen at random from CDC’s 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Ninety-six percent of the participants submitted vaginal swabs for testing (Altman, New York Times, 3/12). About 18% of the girls were infected with HPV, 4% were infected with chlamydia, 2.5% had trichomoniasis and 1.9% had HSV2. About half of the girls surveyed acknowledged having sex. Among this group, 40% had at least one of the four infections (Wall Street Journal, 3/12). Among adolescents who reported having had one sex partner, the rate of STIs was 20% (Dunham, Reuters, 3/11). Of the participants who had an STI, 15% had more than one infection (New York Times, 3/12).

Nearly 50% of African-American girls had at least one of the four STIs, compared with 20% of white and Mexican-American girls (Wall Street Journal, 3/12). The researchers attributed the higher STI prevalence among black girls to limited access to health care (Beras, Miami Herald, 3/12). John Douglas, director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, at the conference recommended that physicians who diagnose girls and women with a curable STI give them additional drugs to give to their male partners. Douglas said the strategy, called “expedited partner therapy,” is a “promising approach” (Wetzstein, Washington Times, 3/12). Douglas also recommended that girls and women diagnosed with an STI be retested three months after treatment to detect and treat possible reinfection.

About 19 million new STIs are diagnosed annually in the U.S. in all age groups, according to the Times. Annual screening for chlamydia is recommended for sexually active women younger than age 25. CDC recommends that females ages 11 to 26 be vaccinated against HPV (New York Times, 3/12). The agency also recommends routine HIV testing for all people ages 13 to 64, regardless of perceived risk (Washington Times, 3/12).

Comments

Douglas said that the high STI rates are “clear signs” that CDC “must continue developing ways to reach” people most at risk of contracting an infection (New York Times, 3/12). Kevin Fenton, director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention at CDC, said that “screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among [the agency's] highest public health priorities.”

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said the study shows that “the national policy of promoting abstinence-only programs is a $1.5 billion failure,” adding that “teenage girls are paying the real price” (Tanner, AP/Google.com, 3/11).

CBS’ “Evening News” on Tuesday reported on the study. The segment includes comments from Douglas and Elizabeth Alderman of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (LaPook, “Evening News,” CBS, 3/11).

NBC’s “Nightly News” on Tuesday also reported on the study. The segment includes comments from nurse practitioner Paula Bryant-Barnett and Fenton (Guthrie, “Nightly News,” NBC, 3/11).
