In twin votes likely to add considerable force to U.S. marketing efforts for HPV vaccines, an FDA expert panel has voted to back GlaxoSmithKline’s long delayed application to market its HPV vaccine Cervarix to women and soon after supported Merck’s application to extend the use of Gardasil to males. Glaxo shares gain 0.5 pct, Merck shares gain 1.9 pct.

Glaxo had originally tried and failed to gain FDA approval for Cervarix back in 2007 but was thwarted by the agency’s desire to see more information on potential side effects, particularly a heightened risk of miscarriage. Since that time the pharma giant has gained approvals in more than 100 countries, while biding its time with the FDA. And while the panel concluded that the link between Cervarix and miscarriages is tenuous, the experts suggested a warning to prevent pregnant women from getting the vaccine. The panel vote makes it all but certain that Glaxo will gain final marketing approval from the FDA, opening the door to the world’s biggest drug market and finally offering Merck some competition for Gardasil. Glaxo’s shares were buoyed by the news.

Food and Drug Administration advisers, in an 11-1 vote, said Cervarix appeared safe despite miscarriages reported around the time of vaccination and a small number of autoimmune problems such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Panelists urged monitoring for those issues after approval to see if there was any link to the vaccine.Merck, meanwhile, is seeking an FDA approval to use its HPV vaccine to guard against genital warts in boys and men. The panel gave Merck its support, but there was widespread agreement that the use of an HPV vaccine for males 9 to 26 offered little protection against cancer, as HPV-related penile and anal cancer cases are extremely rare. The FDA has indicated that any final approval on Gardasil’s use in males will require post-marketing safety studies.

We are seeing good responses coming from England, Scotland and the Netherlands in regards to efforts being made to suspend these vaccines pending further safety studies, etc.  Since the distribution of this paper and a second paper to these scientists and other concerned parties we are now seeing an upsurge in responses from other countries around the world.

We have been written about in The Scotsman.  This is what they wrote.  “The International Coalition of Advocates for the People (ICAP) – a group raising concerns of the safety and efficacy of Cervarix and its rival, Gardasil, to health ministers and researchers worldwide – want a thorough investigation into the vaccine.  The organization successfully lobbied the health minister and medical experts in Germany. Now the country’s Federal Joint Committee, which decides on the formula for the country’s social insurance system, has called for all recommendations on Cervarix and Gardasil to be revised and demanded a new report based on detailed evidence.”

I C A P added: “We believe the health and welfare of young people is of paramount importance and would welcome a delay in the Cervarix vaccination programme until all avenues are thoroughly investigated.” This last statement was made by our Advocates in the United Kingdom.

Presently, in the US we have started to organize groups in every state to bring this information to our legislators in order to suspend this vaccination.   We are positive people who want positive change for all the people.  We may be few presently but we are adding new people every day.

There are so many issues that involve the health and wellbeing, the environment, new technologies that need to be further utilized, etc. that need to be addressed in the near future.

With our exponential growth it is going to require that in the near future that I travel and because of this I will need to hire staff to keep up with the phone calls, etc.

The attached paper has been prepared by concerned individuals from the United Kingdom, United States of America and Holland in regards to the safety and efficacy of the HPV vaccines.

We intend to prove that the serious health concerns that are becoming evident due to Gardasil and Cervarix around the world are valid.  You will see that the studies themselves will prove the lack of efficacy and the increased risks to the health of our young people.  Also entered into this report are communications with the lead researcher for both Gardasil and Cervarix.  Included are reports of young girls and women who have had serious adverse effects and deaths with unknown etiology from America and Europe.   Attached is a video of Karen Maynor who lost her daughter after receiving the Gardasil vaccination.  This mother is trying to come to terms with the fact that the post mortem determination is unknown.

We also want you to know that an inquiry was done by the researchers in the United States as to the overall health and activity level of the affected young people pre-vaccination.  The results of the inquiry and investigation that ensued are startling.  It has been determined that the young people most likely to be affected are very active, athletic and high achievers or have a serious weight problem.  A subset of the affected received the vaccination when they were at the pre-menstrual time of their cycle.  What these three groups have in common is that estrogen, which we know protects the brain from stroke, is decreased leaving the brain more susceptible to damage of the capillaries and the neurotoxin Aluminum.

We are aware that you are questioning the effectiveness of Cervarix.   Thousands of young girls and women are experiencing severe adverse events and their quality of life is vastly diminished around the world from Gardasil and Cervarix HPV vaccines.  Could you please also look at the bigger picture in regards to the safety of our children and take into account the many comments which have been made.

We do so hope you will read our submission and if you wish to ask any questions of the authors, email addresses have been provided.  We do so hope that you will give serious consideration to our many concerns in regards to the safety and efficacy of both HPV vaccines.

That email was both a culmination and a beginning.

The submission of the paper culminated years of research, analysis, and educational advocacy by a group of dedicated volunteers lead by Cynthia Janak and ICAP co-founder, Leslie C. Botha.  The work was an international effort.  A  group of women – three from the United States, two from The Netherlands, one from the UK and one from Scotland spent two weeks coalescing years of research, examining FDA, CDC and Merck documents relating to Gardasil, compiling a factual report from their respective countries that documented concerns about the safety and efficacy of the HPV Vaccine.

Reports are titled:

Treatise on Gardasil from the United States;
United States Concern for Europe with regards to Cervarix HPV vaccine;
United Kingdom Concerns Regarding HPV-GM Vaccines;
The Dutch Cervarix Concerns;
and, One Mother’s Plea.

The successful submission of these reports to the thirteen scientists at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Germany and to the German Health Minister was also a beginning. The reports represented the first educational advocacy project undertaken by the International Coalition of Advocates for the People. RKI is re-examining the safety of the HPV vaccine for use in their country. Their decision will be made in the next few weeks.

ICAP Advocates, Freda Birrell and Christina England released the reports to the media in Scotland and the UK – and to their respective parliaments. Ms England, a research journalist, has written several well received articles that have been published by news outlets on both sides of the Atlantic. The women have received acclaim and praise for their due diligence in presenting information that backs up their concerns:

In previous posts I have mentioned Netherlands-based ICAP advocates, Janny Stokvis and Annelies Witlam who have worked tirelessly to support the HPV-vaccine education process in the Netherlands, the UK, EU Canada and Americ

ICAP’s first international effort has been a success. Seven women who became international advocates wrote a paper about HPV vaccines to educate all necessary parties in Europe.   This paper has been distributed throughout Europe and to select individuals in the United States.

Presently, thirteen German scientists from the Robert Koch Institute are questioning the effectiveness of these vaccines.  They are also asking for evidence now from the Standing Committee based on the scientists’ views.

Scotland now is questioning the vaccines over fears about the adverse reactions being reported in Scotland and England.

Also, in the UK leading scientists and doctors have raised fresh concerns about the safety of a cervical cancer vaccine.  They have accused the manufacturers of Cervarix and Gardasil, of making misleading claims.

I am proud to be counted amongst these seven women Advocates and a charter member of the International Coalition of Advocates For The People (ICAP).

GSK’s Witty envisions new research ties to biotechs

Anxious to create a more innovative environment to develop new drugs, GlaxoSmithKline CEO Andrew Witty says the pharma giant is exploring ways to link its research facilities around the world to start-up biotech companies that can collaborate on new products.

“Startups could co-locate with us and create a new type of foundation for discovery,” Witty told the International Association of Science Parks conference in Raleigh, home to one of the country’s largest research centers. And he reiterated GSK’s interest in small acquisitions and partnerships to provide a fresh jolt of new ideas for a company in bad need of good drug development programs.

Witty also underscored that the presence of large academic institutions staffed with top researchers won’t be enough to woo companies like GSK in the future. Even more important, he says, is a pro-business attitude “to make the interface between industry and academia porous.”

The quote from Andrew Witty, GKS CEO gave me pause:

Is a porous, pro-business attitude between industry and academia a good thing?  Based our current experience with GKS HPV-vaccine, Cervarix, I’m thinking, perhaps not.

I read this story and followed the links and read the other articles. If you are a business-geek, chip-head like me you can see the symetry of the GSK plan. It makes business sense and takes advantage of the new IT technologies and process to streamline development processes. An old Edwards Deming grad like me throughally approves. The women’s health advocate in me is conncerned that the line between objective research and critical trial results and repoting will be blurred by the technology. GKS has not been the best corporate citizen, old school. GKS in the ‘cloud’ computing environment bare a watchful eye.

Klachten over HPV-inenting Schotland

geplaatst: woensdag, 3 juni 2009, 8.54 uur Meer dan 150 Schotse meisjes hebben zich met klachten gemeld nadat zij afgelopen herfst waren ingeënt tegen enkele humane pappilomavirussen die baarmoederhalskanker zouden veroorzaken. Dat meldt The Scotsman. Tegenstanders van de vaccinatie hebben opgeroepen het inentingsprogramma te staken. Volgens hen zijn er te veel onbeantwoorde vragen over de veiligheid en de blijvende effectiviteit van het middel cervarix. Ook Nederlandse meisjes worden sinds januari met het middel ingeënt.

Volgens de krant hebben de ouders van zes Britse meisjes fabrikant GlaxoSmithKline voor de rechter gedaagd nadat zij ernstige klachten kregen waaronder verlammingsverschijnselen, toevallen en chronische vermoeidheid. Nog eens twee meisjes zouden zich bij een advocaat hebben gemeld wegens zeer pijnlijke zwellingen in de gewrichten.

De Schotse overheid en GlaxoSmithKline blijven erbij dat het aantal negatieve reacties overeenstemt met iedere massavaccinatie. Volgens The Scotsman is de bijsluiterinformatie voor de ouders na tussenkomst van een farmaceutisch bedrijf gewijzigd. Volgens critici was die informatie voor zowel ouders als medici vaag en misleidend. Schotse parlementariërs willen dat de gerezen vragen worden opgehelderd voordat nog meer meisjes worden ingeënt.

In Groot-Brittannië zijn in totaal rond 800.000 inentingen verricht. Sindsdien zijn 1.716 ‘verdachte’ reacties gemeld. In de ergste gevallen ging het om verlammingsverschijnselen en blindheid. Het is onduidelijk of de slachtoffers daarvan volledig zullen herstellen. Volgens tegenstanders zouden veel meer jonge vrouwen hebben geklaagd maar zouden hun klachten zijn toegeschreven aan angst voor vaccinatie. Zij wijzen erop dat het vaccin nog geen zeven jaar is getest. Daardoor is er geen enkel bewijs dat het vaccin op langere termijn effectief is en geen verdere bijwerkingen heeft. Tegenstanders spreken over een grootschalig “experiment” op burgers.

Volgens de fabrikant is het vaccin grondig getest. Hij bevestigt dat de inenting regelmatig leidt tot neveneffecten als hoofd- en spierpijn, rode uitslag en zwelling bij de plaats van inenting en vermoeidheid. Bij een kleiner aantal meisjes zou de inenting leiden tot buikklachten zoals misselijkheid, braken, diarree en buikpijn, jeuk, uitslag en koorts. Een nog kleiner aantal zou klagen over duizeligheid, luchtweginfecties en dufheid.

Bij de Britse gezondheidsdienst zijn ook klachten gemeld als allergische reacties, bewusteloosheid en flauwtes.

In Nederland worden klachten van overheidswege al snel afgedaan als ‘onbewezen’. Critici wordt ‘bangmakerij’ verweten. Daarmee zouden zij de volksgezondheid in gevaar brengen. Verschillende media, waaronder Trouw en het tv-programma Radar hebben zeer kritisch bericht over de HPV-vaccinatie. (KN)

My associate from the Netherlands, women and children’s health advocate, Janny Stokvis sent me a resent analysis of the UK adverse reactions figures.  I wanted to share them with my Inconvenient Women readers.  The toll of illness and death amongst girls and young women who have received HPV-Vaccinations continues to rise… and our “representative  governments” continue to ignore the pleas and questions of the families affected by a public health policy that increasingly seems flawed at best, and at worst, corrupted by the power of Pharma’s lobbyists’ influence.

All any of us, who have raised questions about the rapid deployment of the HPV vaccines, Gadasil and Cervarix, have ever wanted, is an objective review of the clinic trial information by scientist not related to Big Pharma. In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute is in that process right now.  The question American, Canadian, and other EU citizens are asking is, “Why are our own governmental agencies and regulators so against a similar objective review of the clinic trial information  and independent medical review of the thousands of reported HPV-vaccine adverse effect cases?  Is the no “Robert Koch Institute-like” organization that can ask the questions for our citizens?”

Scores of girls have died or lie critically ill. The families of the sick and stricken girls have a right to be respected and represented by their elected officials. Every parent has the right to ask questions and expect honest answers about any chemical that the “State” decrees be inject into our children. Government officials are playing dice with a generation of our children.

All we ask is to educate before you vaccinate. That is not a radical request; it is only common sense.
Our children are too precious to risk in a rush to profit by the pharmaceutical industrial complex.

UK health officials have wrongly assumed the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine can prevent 70 per cent of cases of cervical cancer and press reports show “German experts said the assumptions simply did not stand up to scrutiny, and that women remained at risk“: Experts Cast Doubt on Claim for ‘Wonder’ Cancer Jabs Sunday Express 31 May 2009: Cervical cancer jabs cast into doubt after experts question effectiveness

The HPV vaccine can have serious adverse effects with high levels of reported adverse reactions.  Death and debilitating illness have been claimed but officials do not acknowledge an association.

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute, which makes recommendations on the public funding of vaccines, is reviewing its programme after 13 experts called for a reassessment of its HPV vaccination programme and an end to “misleading information” about the effectiveness of the jab.  A spokeswoman said: “Because of the public discussion and some new reports and new statements from the 13 professors, the committee will publish a statement within the next few weeks.”

The UK’s New Labour Government has been aggressively pursuing the HPV vaccine programme in schools out of sight of parental control.  Some consent forms reportedly have no decline option.   There are anecdotal reports of young girls being cross-examined in school corridors by health officials on parental consent issues. British Health Minister Dawn Primarolo is closely associated with the pursuit of the policy.

The Sunday Express reports Professor Martina Doren, of the Charitie Hospital in Berlin:

“What concerns us is that the two manufacturers of the vaccine aren’t always using facts. They claim that a lot of high-risk strains of cancer-causing virus are protected against but equally there are others that are not. If protection is not more than 20 per cent then that is an awful lot of money to be spending, particularly as the vaccines have quite serious side-effects.”

A spokesman for GlaxoSmithKline, which makes Cervarix, was unable to provide figures on cases of pre-cancerous cells in women who have taken the vaccine, compared with those who have not.

Scottish Conservative health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon said:

“Given this new research, it is now incumbent on the Scottish Government and the chief medical officer to review the vaccination programme to ensure that it lives up to the expectations of preventing cervical cancer.”

The HPV vaccine programme is based on recommendations of the UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation. This highlights questions over the competence of the UK’s JCVI to make recommendations on UK vaccination programmes and the competence of medical professionals in general to express opinions on scientific matters.

The JCVI has a documented history of recklessness over vaccination policy and a needle-happy reputation along with concerns about financial and other conflicts of interest: Secret British MMR Vaccine Files Forced Open By Legal Action but from April 1 this year has been given in unfettered control of UK Government vaccination policy for England: UK Government Hands Drug Industry Control of Childhood Vaccination.  And as the British Medical Journal confirms Doctors are not scientists: Doctors are not scientists — Smith 328 (7454): BMJ.

If the vaccine is not effective, then its adverse effects cannot be justified but in the UK we see no official comment on the vaccine’s risk profile.  This highlights how public safety issues fail to be addressed as a result of  what some claim is a quasi-religious belief created by the drug industry in the importance of vaccines and the fear medical professionals have of making public criticisms on safety grounds.

The push for mass vaccination is driven by the commercial interest of the drug industry in moving to new business models.  Financial markets have known for 20 years and more the pharmaceutical industry’s blockbuster patented drugs business model would eventualy fail

The Bill Gates’ Microsoft type business model is one of the emerging replacements – almost everyone has Windows software on their PC – almost everyone will be vax’ed.  Gates quickly became a multi-billionaire.  With vastly more people to vaccinate than computers requiring software the lure of money for the pharmaceutical industry is substantial.

Alongside the expansion of vaccination programmes the childhood prevalence of lifetime conditions like asthma, allergies, autism, diabetes and others requiring further medications have increased substantially.

EXPERTS CAST DOUBT ON CLAIM FOR ‘WONDER’ CANCER JABS

LEADING scientists and doctors have raised fresh concerns about the safety of a cervical cancer vaccine.

They have accused the manufacturers of Cervarix and another jab, Gardasil, of making misleading claims.

More than 1,300 British girls have reported adverse reactions to Cervarix, ranging from paralysis to convulsions and sight problems.

Hailed as a wonder drug, it is claimed the jab will give 70 per cent protection from the disease to every girl under 18 by 2011.

Earlier this month the Sunday Express revealed the story of Rebecca Ramagge, 13, of Reigate, Surrey, who has been unable to walk for six months because of a joint disorder.

In Germany, 13 distinguished professors have complained that the jab makers, Glaxo SmithKline and Sanofi, have been guilty of giving “incorrect” information.

Professor Martina Doren, of the Charitie Hospital in Berlin, said: “What concerns us is that the two manufacturers of the vaccine aren’t always using facts. They claim that a lot of high-risk strains of cancer-causing virus are protected against but equally there are others that are not.”

“If protection is not more than 20 per cent then that is an awful lot of money to be spending, particularly as the vaccines have quite serious side-effects.”

“Assertions that a vaccine reduces the risk of cervical cancer by 70 per cent or even 98 per cent should not be made at this point.”

Professor Doren criticised the fact that the only trials for the vaccines were carried out on women aged between 15 and 26 while the vaccine was being given to 12 and 13 year olds.

She said: “It is wrong to vaccinate these girls when it has not been tried on this age group. It is unethical.

“We are meant to be in an era where drugs and vaccines to be used on children are given trials on that age group first before awarding a licence. Otherwise you are experimenting on children, which is wrong.”

Last night a spokesman for the German national vaccines committee told the Sunday Express that a review of the evidence was under way.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands there has been mass resistance to the vaccine with only 49 per cent of girls turning up to have the first jab of the three- injection course.

Six Dutch girls were taken to hospital after being inoculated and there have been reports of more than 500 other adverse reactions.

Doctors there are calling on their national vaccines committee to reconsider its decision to back vaccination of schoolgirls. Many scientists claim the figure of 70 per cent protection against cervical cancer is not based on scientific evidence and has been used to convince parents that their girls ought to have the jab.

Experts in Scotland, where the Health Service has spent more than £64million vaccinating schoolgirls, are also expressing concerns.

Scottish Conservative health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon said: “Given this new research, it is incumbent on the Scottish government and the chief ­medical officer to review the vaccin­ation programme to ensure that it lives up to the expectations of preventing cervical cancer.”

Last February 80,000 jabs in Valencia and the Balearic Islands were withdrawn after three girls ended up in hospital with convulsions and loss of consciousness within hours of being inoculated.

Spanish heath officials later concluded the vaccine had not caused the problems.

A spokesman for GlaxoSmithKline said: “These vaccines provide young girls and women valuable new protection against cervical cancer and have been thoroughly tested by vaccine experts.

“The German health authorities have reiterated their positive assessment of these vaccines and continue to make them fully available.”

All around the world concerns are mounting about the effectiveness and the safety of the HPV vaccines. Whilst many of our Governments refuse to listen to public concern and ignore the ever increasing numbers of children who have had adverse reactions to the Gardasil and Cervarix vaccines, in Germany their concerns are at last being looked at and examined carefully.

The Robert Koch Institute in Germany which makes recommendations on the public funding of vaccines, is reviewing its vaccination programme after 13 experts called for a reassessment of its HPV vaccination programme and an end to “misleading information” about the effectiveness of the jab.

Scotland on Sunday reported a few weeks ago – A spokeswoman for the Robert Koch Institute said its vaccination committee was reviewing the situation, adding: “Because of the public discussion and some new reports and new statements from the 13 professors, the committee will publish a statement within the next few weeks.”

Scotland to, is seriously looking into it’s vaccination policy as regards the vaccine Cervarix due to the concerns of the papers written by the German Scientists as H. Sandra Chevalier-Batik reports

“SCOTLAND´S multimillion-pound cervical cancer vaccination programme was thrown into doubt last night after senior public health experts warned it might not be as effective as initially hoped. Government advisers in Germany are reviewing the program there after leading scientists said the jab was failing to live up to expectations on the number of cervical cancer cases it might prevent.

Now critics say Scottish health advisers, who gave the go-ahead for a £64 million immunization program involving thousands of schoolgirls, should review the evidence as well. The HPV vaccine protects against two strains of the human papilloma virus, which are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. About 100 Scottish women die of the sexually transmitted disease every year.”

In the past few weeks professionals and concerned mothers from the USA, UK and Holland have come together and decided to write to these 13 scientists outlining their concerns. These concerned individuals have each come into contact with the victims of these vaccines and armed with newly revealed evidence they decided to email these scientists direct. They have drawn up papers which they have sent to these scientists backed up with their evidence and statistics showing that their concerns are indeed warranted. These papers were then sent to 700 professionals worldwide.The professionals who received them are from the medical profession, scientists, Governments , Journalists and many more. They are being put up on websites all over the world. Last night Cynthia Janak one of the authors of the USA paper sent an email to the other authors which said:-

“I just received an email from an oncologist and he agreed that the safety has not truly been proven because of the documents we have presented.”

Professionals in general have said the papers were well presented and extremely well written.

This morning this was quoted in an email to one the authors of the UK paper Freda Birrell.

All Governments and anyone daring to proclaim that vaccines are safe should listen to what he says because this man is very very powerful indeed. In a news article just released, called Vaccines used in children causing brain damage he explained how with the use of before and after photographs of children he can prove 100% that children have had brain damage from the MMR.

This evidence was used in the Ben Zeller case. Ben Zeller, says his son, Ben, was a normal 11-month-old when he received the MMR.

Within days, he had a seizure. The seizure was so severe that it left Ben with permanent brain damage.

Mr Zeller had always believed that Ben’s fit was a reaction to the MMR. Ben was a healthy and happy child into everything After the vaccine he was left with severe brain damage.

Zeller was one of the first to prove his case in the Federal Vaccine Court. Last July, the court ruled his son would not have experienced the seizure if it weren’t for the MMR vaccine.

Dr Moulden said “We have thousands of cases and we can show all vaccines are causing the exact same problem,”

Obviously the Ben Zeller case and Dr Moulden’s brilliant research and factual evidence that vaccines can cause brain damage have not yet reached the UK Government because Dawn Primarolo the UK Health Minister is so convinced or as some say ‘brainwashed’ that vaccines are 100% safe that she is breaking the promises made by the UK Government and via the JCVI is moving towards making vaccines compulsory in UK for all citizens including children. All in all the evidence that vaccines do cause some children to have severe reactions is mounting and Governments who collude with the drug companies and crooked committees who have members who sit in meetings discussing serious adverse reactions, including cot death and then go into courts as expert witnesses and say mothers have killed their children and adverse reactions to vaccines could not have played a part in their child’s death and other members who have links to drug companies should take note. The public are not thick and through the Internet now have access to the truth.

HPV vaccines were a hot topic during the 25th International Papillomavirus Conference, held May 8-14 in Malmö, Sweden. In the weeks leading up to the big event, Glaxo’s PR machine has been touting new Cervarix vs. Gardasil head-to-head study, saying Cervarix prompted a stronger immune response. The ever-marketing Merck has been promoting its own ‘new’ study data, which claims Gardasil offers protection from certain HPV strains for up to 9.5 years. Originally, the Merck marketing blitzkrieg claimed Gardasil’s protective shield lasted for five years. Based on another study, which they did not site in the press release, Merck is now claiming their HPV-vaccine, Gardasil cut down on abnormal Pap tests and cervical procedures. It should be noted that GlaxoSmithKline were platinum sponsors of the International Papillomavirus Conference, and Merck was an exhibitor.

Well the big boys huffed and they puffed, but neither Merck nor Glaxo posited the big issue —can trial data make a big difference in revenues for either company?

Merck’s U.S. sales of Gardasil are falling off, sharply, plummeting 33 percent in the first quarter, and Glaxo’s Cervarix has not yet won FDA approval for sales in the US.

Thanks to a Fast Track approval from FDA and an endorsement from the CDC, not to mention aggressive lobbying and a wildly successful, but predatory marketing campaign, Merck has the sole HPV shot available in the U.S. to date. It’s fully entrenched in the market. However, during the past year, Merck has seen a trending decline in the sales of its HPV vaccine, Gardasil. Parental backlash to State mandated Gardasil vaccination policies, has slowed down the lobbying juggernaut that marked Merck’s 2006 Gardasil vaccine introduction. An increasing number of adverse effects, including death, have been reported, raising safety concerns. In the final count, the decline in Gardasil sales can be attributed to Merck’s award-winning “One Less” marketing program. It was wildly successful in attracting huge numbers of early adapters. Caring mom’s flocked to their family doctors for the Gardasil shot, wanting to protect their girls from cervical cancer. As the majority of early adapter girls and young women complete their three-shot series, the pool of unvaccinated females shrinks. To grow that market Merck has been positioning Gardasil for wider distribution the new target market is older women and boys.

Even with the long-delayed FDA approval, Glaxo will have to fight very hard indeed to crave out significant market share for it’s HPV-vaccine, Cervarix. Glaxo is dealing with efficacy issues in the U.K. The Scotsman reports that an influential German public-health organization is reviewing both Cervarix and Gardasil HPV-vaccination policy after 13 researchers claimed that governments might have bought into “overly optimistic” assumptions about how effective HPV-vaccination really is against cervical cancer. The Robert Koch Institute says it will issue a report in two weeks. Additionally, HPV-vaccine critics in Scotland are calling for government to review its $97 million commitment to its HPV-vaccination program.
