The U.S. House of Representatives Approves $8 Billion for Swine Flu (H1N1) Pandemic

The U.S. House of Representatives approved $7.65 billion in new money to respond to the swine flu pandemic. The money will go toward the purchase of vaccine, antiviral drugs, and other medical needs. Congress also stipulated that the funds be available for surveillance and to help assist international efforts. At least $350 million must be spent on “upgrading State and local capacity.”

Commercial Manufacturing of H1N1 ‘Swine Flu’ Vaccine Underway

Protein Sciences Corporation (PSC) announced that today it commenced manufacturing of a vaccine to protect humans against the H1N1 “swine flu” virus. The Company estimates that it can produce 100,000 doses this week and at least 100,000 doses per week thereafter. The vaccine, called PanBlok(R), is made using PSC’s proprietary baculovirus and insect cell manufacturing technology. PSC believes that PanBlok is the first and only vaccine that could be used to protect against the escalating worldwide pandemic, at least for the next few months.

Quel Surprise! Swine Flu Is Ready

The World Health Organization last week raised the pandemic level to phase 6, calling for the implementation of “individual, societal, and pharmaceutical measures” as well as implementation of contingency plans for health systems. WHO continues to recommend no restrictions on travel and no border closures, however. Some 100,000 doses of Protein Sciences’ PanBlok vaccine, being produced from this week forward, will be targeted for clinical trials and for vaccinations in countries that have granted regulatory clearance. Meanwhile, following the WHO announcement, GlaxoSmithKline says it is going to increase production of its anti-viral Relenza, and continue developing a swine flu vaccine. Separately, Chinese vaccine maker Sinovac Biotech says it hopes to put its H1N1 vaccine through its first clinical trial by the end of July.

Living At Capacity, Drawing Upon the Infinite

So when you’re trying and it’s not quite getting there, stop, step back and see how much more you really are. As an expression of the Infinite, see how deep, profound and powerful you really are. You are not drawing upon your historical abilities, you are drawing upon the Infinite, and that’s a lot.

WHO Declares World Now At The Start of 2009 Influenza Pandemic

In a statement to the press by WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, she stated that based on available evidence, and the expert assessments of leading influenza experts, virologists, and public health officials the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6.

Current WHO Phase of Pandemic Alert

In the 2009 revision of the phase descriptions, WHO has retained the use of a six-phased approach for easy incorporation of new recommendations and approaches into existing national preparedness and response plans. The grouping and description of pandemic phases have been revised to make them easier to understand, more precise, and based upon observable phenomena. Phases 1–3 correlate with preparedness, including capacity development and response planning activities, while Phases 4–6 clearly signal the need for response and mitigation efforts. Furthermore, periods after the first pandemic wave are elaborated to facilitate post pandemic recovery activities.

MMR Vaccination, Living with the Consequences

“Living with the Consequences” Nigel Thomas’ talk presented at the Thoughtful House UK Conference, March 2006, was so personal, and achingly authentic, I wanted to share it with my Inconvenient Woman readers. Nigel, you see, is the elder brother of two affected children, Michael, thirteen and Terry, twelve. Both younger brothers had the MMR vaccine. (a mixture of three live attenuated viruses, administered via injection for immunization against measles, mumps and rubella) The MMR resulted in complex medical problems including autistic enterocolitis.

Mr. Letterman, Misogyny Is NEVER, EVER, Funny

I was deeply disappointed and disturbed about Arianna Huffington’s comment that Palin was displaying “manufactured outrage” over Letterman’s disgusting sex jokes. Women protect their young, period. If Letterman had used the exact same joke, but featured Michelle Obama and Malia, instead of Palin and Willow. Obama’s outrage would be no more manufactured than Palin’s. CBS would be carrying the has-been, unfunny man out of the Ed Sullivan Theater on his shield, to be interned, after a very short, private service, in the general vicinity of New Jersey’s Meadowlands. Women protect their young, period.

International Coalition of Advocates for the People

We are presently addressing an issue that involves the health and well being of every young girl and young women in the world. This is in regards to the HPV vaccines. With international collaboration we brought together information about these two vaccines and distributed a detailed paper to the 13 scientists that advise the EU but to other concerned parties such as the Minister of Health for Germany. We are seeing good responses coming from England, Scotland and the Netherlands in regards to efforts being made to suspend these vaccines pending further safety studies, etc. Since the distribution of this paper and a second paper to these scientists and other concerned parties we are now seeing an upsurge in responses from other countries around the world.
